Matt,
Thanks for the post. It is concise yet complete and gives a grounded snapshot of the many advantages for adopting a meaningful, church covenant. In light of the fact that over the last century American church membership has lost its meaning to both the church and to the culture, I don't think we can overemphasize the importance of clarity in church life.

Another major advantage of church covenants in addition to protection from legal action by disgruntled members is that a covenant can be used to clarify what actions may warrant church discipline. If you look at "The Village" church covenant, it reads drastically different from the more traditional covenant (employed by Capitol Hill Baptist Church) which seems to be heavily influenced by J. Newton Brown.

Though not exhaustive, the Village's covenant includes specific behavior that is expected of church members. For example, they ask for members to covenant to seek church intervention when considering divorce.

I find covenants like this, which though they do not read as well, to be even more helpful when defining expectations for church membership.

Any thoughts on the different types of covenants that churches may use?

BTW, I regularly follow your blog. It has been a blessing and a service to me. Keep writing!

Nicholai,

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. Allow me to respond to your comment above. - God can only be charged of megalomania if He is unworthy of receiving praise. If you have time read through the article below. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks, but just the same I think I am happier as an all embracing tolerant Hindu. The Christian God shows too many symtoms of megalomania for my taste.

"Whew"!!! Long, long but I enjoyed most of your post and how true still today many Christians feel that if they don't do all the good they can they will not get into heaven,it's so sad and there is so much foul wrong teaching going on.And so many are set in their ways and will not listen to sound doctrine,Jesus said "It Is Finished" Jesus did it all for us and once you're saved it is finished "nothing" to add. I had to encourage myself this morning the flesh kept trying to make me compare myself to others and that's a waste of time when I know Jesus is pleased with me and I am all ready accepted!!!
Love you brother have a good evening.

If you believe your own statement, what is the purpose of arguing for atheism and confronting Christians? If you have the truth, why should you need to?
